MAM March 6, 2013 - Simple Ways to Play at Home

By Malissa McClintock, Contributing Writer

I can hardly believe that when I look at the calendar the word March stares back at me. March means spring is coming, and with it even crazier weather than the winter brought. With two very active little girls and the impending birth of a little boy, I am compiling a list of ways to entertain my girls in the house. I am trying to create simple ideas that we can enjoy without buying anything extra or expensive. I'm also trying to prevent creating any extra work for myself -- I'll have plenty with the kids.  So here's a small list of what we are planning on doing as I grow bigger, the spring rains fall, and a little boy is born.

Explaining Homebirth to the Girls

When Drew and I made the decision to have this little boy at home, there were a lot of discussions to be had. We had to be sure we were both okay with the decision. We had both sets of parents to tell and answer a few questions. We had some friends that we wanted to tell in person due to our feeling they might be a tad  - apprehensive -  about the idea. And, of course, we had two little girls to tell.

I struggled with how to tell the girls that Mommy was having a baby at home. We started with Miss Moo, who at 3 has a better understanding of the physiology of the birth process than her sister. She has also experienced a sibling addition before- although I don't know if she truly remembers it or not.  Miss Roo has been present for all the discussions and questions. We've also done a lot of talking to her about her Baby Brother in my belly and his inevitable arrival in our home.

I wanted a little more support in our education process, so I purchased the book We're Having a Homebirth! This fantastic little book is written by the fantastic Kelly Mochel and is available through her website as well as Amazon. If you don't know about it, check out her site and keep reading!

We're Having a Homebirth! is a fantastic little book, narrated by a little girl who's mama is about to have a baby. It explains concepts such as prenatal visits, early labor, transition and delivery, as well as the initial postpartum hours in a simple, concise way that is easy for little children to understand. The images are vivid, modern, eye catching, and simple. (More sample pages can be found here.)

The size of the book is PERFECT for little hands that want to "read" it on their own or closely investigate the action in the illustrations. Moo often asks to read our copy after breakfast and before "school" time starts. She loves pointing out that the new Baby Brother is eating the Mommy's boobies like she and her sister did. She also asks new questions every time we read it,
"Will my baby brother cry a lot?"
"Can I help you take care of him?"
"Will my Baby Brother want to cuddle with me?"

This book has been instrumental in helping her understand what is going on with my body, her Baby Brother's body, and the steps of the impending birth happening in our home. It also gives her a way to be involved "I can make him a birthday cake!!" and the opportunity to ask questions in a comfortable setting by sitting with us to read it.

I highly recommend this little book for your own collection, your midwife's, your doula's, and any (and all ;) ) of your friends! Please feel free to ask any questions you have - but most importantly grab this book!  Although the homebirth community is growing, it's still a small one. We all need to support one another and pass along all the help and information we can!

Daddy Day for All of Us

Family hike on High Bridge Trail.
I'm a bit cloudy as I write this from lack of sleep, lack of my one cup of coffee, and lack of my partner in crime. The girls and I head home today to see Daddy and settle back into our own space. I am generally very happy to go home and see my husband. But this trip, I am overjoyed to be returning to my fuzzy-faced Drew. I have missed him, I have missed his support, I have missed his help, but mostly I have missed that feeling of partnership that forms when you have a relationship with someone that deepens over time.
Renn Fest as an engaged couple.

On April 15, Drew and I will have been together for 6 years. While this isn't as long as many of you have been with your spouses and partners,  it's the longest relationship for either of us, the most solid relationship for either of us, and the relationship that feels like it has always been there.

We've had an eventful 6 years -  "met"**  in 2007, married in 2008, Miss Moo in 2009, moved to Richmond in 2010, Miss Roo in 2011, added Lady Loo to the crew in 2012, and expecting Baby Boy in about 4.5 weeks. As our family continues to grow and mature, so does our marriage.  I realize how much I treasure that man and all he does for us- whether I appreciate it at the time or not.

Roasting marshmallows with Roo.

So, we head home today. The girls get Daddy. I get my husband. And we all get our family of 4 reunion- for the last time before we grow.

** That's a post to come- probably when I'm nursing a newborn every 2-3 hours and unable to think well about anything ;)

Sunday at NanaPop's

We have spent the past few days on our last trip as a trio of gals to NanaPop's. We are enjoying a our last full day before we leave for home in the company of my parents.

I can't help but wonder how this little boy in my belly will make these trips different but even better.

Wishing you a safe and simple Sunday!

MAM March 1, 2013 - Women's History Month: Homeschool Edition

Women’s History Month: Homeschool Edition

Reading together during school time.
By Malissa McClintock, Contributing Writer
I’m a Women’s Studies junkie. It was one of my three minors as an undergraduate and the emphasis of my Master’s. I love learning about women from the past and the fabulous women around the world who strive daily to make the lives of their mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, and future generations better. I love to see women who are from completely different backgrounds pull together to support one another in the face of adversity and struggle together to overcome obstacles.  I love women who are strong in their careers. I love women who fight for political rights. I love women who stay home to raise their children. Women are amazing.

Friday Fun - Daddy is Pretty Awesome!

Every little girl loves Daddy. After all, he is a first love, a hero, and the best cuddler on the planet.

But who wouldn't love a Daddy that not only fixes the eye on your Sparkly Pony, but also gives her an eye patch to heal?!?!

Pirate Moo was a happy girl when this met her at breakfast the next morning:

My girls are lucky to have him as their Daddy.

My son will love his Dad and look up to him.

And I continue to thank God for all the blessings he has provided us. Especially my husband.
